If a closet full of books (not clothes) wasn’t enough of a hint, then the drafts of books and living-room newscasts I weekly produced should have been key clues for my parents about what my future would hold.
Throughout my youth I maintained an interest in reading and writing but found a particular niche in public speaking. I earned a BA in Communication (with a double major in English and a minor in Spanish) and an MA in Communication from Wake Forest University. I then earned a PhD in Communication from Texas A&M University. My most recent publications are two books: Title IX and the Protection of Pregnant and Parenting College Students & Creating Supportive Spaces for Pregnant and Parenting College Students All of my work relates back to rhetoric, or the way written, oral, and visual messages affect people. More details about my work and credentials can be found on my CV. |
About the Director
|
In 2011, I decided to do more with my summer than tutor one or two students. Founding a creative writing program in Winston-Salem became my way of giving back to a community that provided me with so much. The camp has given me a chance to share with young students the value of words beyond school projects. I'm always glad to see students leave camp knowing their writing has a place in this world.

Abi Newhouse
George Mason University (MFA '20) Greetings! My name is Abi Newhouse, and I was born in Oregon, raised in Utah, and currently live in the DC area. I am an MFA student at George Mason University, where I study creative nonfiction writing. I love writing and helping others (like you!) write. The other day as I cleaned out my desk, I found old notebooks full of stories I wrote when I was younger—some fantasy, some realistic fiction, some poetry—and while it was funny to look back on what I wrote, I felt proud that I kept writing. And that’s the biggest secret I’ve found in the process of writing: you have to keep doing it! When I'm not reading or writing, I am playing the guitar, exercising, or cuddling with my cat, Jo. I'm excited to meet everyone at camp! |
Jenny Smith
Wake Forest University ('21) Hello Campers! My name is Jenny Smith, and I am from Walnut Cove, North Carolina. I spent half of my childhood in New Mexico, and moved back to North Carolina when I was 10. I like to study biology and Spanish, so if you ever want to help me practice my Spanish, I would love to talk to you! I plan to go to medical school and become a dermatologist, which is a doctor that takes care of people’s skin. I also like to be outdoors, like camping and hiking, especially at Hanging Rock! If you don’t know about this beautiful park, come ask me about it and I’d be happy to tell you! I’ve spent several summers helping kids like you discover their love of creativity and literature. I’m excited to be with you all for this camping experience! |
Laura Acosta
Wake Forest University ('21) Hola! My name is Laura Maria Acosta. I grew up in San Pedro Sula, Honduras and when I was 15 years old I moved to San Jose, Costa Rica. I’ve always been drawn to creative writing, and when I was growing up I attended the Blue Tree girls camp at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts where I took two weeks of creative writing. My favorite hobbies are rock climbing and scuba diving. I am also a big Harry Potter fan! Nowadays, I spend a lot of my time in the outdoors and shooting short films for my Communication and Philosophy majors. I particularly enjoy the works of Wes Anderson and Spike Lee. I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone this summer! |
