Programs Worth Writing About!
The Great American Writers' Camp is a multi-format creative writing program based in Winston-Salem, NC. Through camps, workshops, and after-school programming, local youth are given opportunities to develop their writing and speaking skills.
GAWC programs blend skill-specific lessons with creative activities, games, and high-quality examples. Youth work in groups, individually, and one-on-one with an instructor to build their skills and develop their own style. As they do, they begin to see how their ideas and words have important places and roles in the world around them.

About the company
The Great American Writers’ Camp, LLC was founded in 2011 by Catherine L. Riley. The program was established with a grant from the WFU Center for Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship. Additional start-up guidance was provided by the directors of the Great Valley Writing Project of California. Originally, GAWC took the form of a summer camp, held annually at Wake Forest University in Carswell Hall, in loose collaboration with the WFU Department of Communication. Over the years, the creative writing and speaking program has evolved in creative ways to meet community needs.
The Great American Writers’ Camp has provided summer camps, workshops, and after-school programs in Winston-Salem for 15 years, and has served students from
SC, WV, TX, NE, CA, FL, and across NC. The programs have helped hundreds of youths develop their skills and interest in writing and speaking. In this way, the director is able to bring her higher education background in rhetoric to the younger, broader world.
